Bike to Work Day [VIDEO, INTERVIEW]
Bike to Work Day is Wednesday June 27, 2012. Since the start of the High Park Fire, there have been air quality alerts in place. The northern Colorado area, including Denver, has been in the orange Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (or USG) classification. Colorado Springs, since the start of the Woodland Park Fire the weekend, has dipped into the unhealthy range.
The classifications of air quality according to Airnow.gov of is detailed here.
Use the Sensors You Have
The moral of the story seems to be that we should be aware that air quality may be less than ideal during the rest of Bike Month and for Bike to Work day. Check online, and then as the Beastie Boys said, check your head. Use your eyes. If you can see smoke within 5 miles, it may be unhealthy to take part in physically straining activity. Use your nose. If you can smell smoke or have problems inhaling, it may be unhealthy to take part in physically straining activity.
I spoke with Molly North, interim Bicycle Coordinator for the City of Fort Collins.
We are encouraging folks to take care of their own health first. This is supposed to be a fun celebration of bicycling as a way of life, but not at the risk of our own health.
Once you decide whether or not you’ll ride, all the information like where the breakfast stations are, what kind of services the city provides and overall two-wheeled, self-propelled magic are found on the city’s website.
