It was a bad season for the Broncos on the field, and a lot of their players are making it a bad year off the field as well. Running back Laurence Maroney, who was acquired from the New England Patriots this year, has been arrested on suspicion of unlawful weapon possession and drug possession.

The 25-year-old Maroney was arrested Monday night in St. Louis. He was a passenger in a car with 5 other people on their way to a concert. His publicist, Jane Higgins, Maroney has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm while under the influence of drugs and marijuana. According to the story from 7News she says he was unlawfully arrested.

"Mr. Maroney was unlawfully arrested for possession of weapons...He holds a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He was not arrested for any drugs, nor was he involved in a high-speed chase. He was released without being charged with any offense and we do not anticipate he will be charged with any criminal offense."

So maybe Maroney didn't do anything wrong.  Or maybe his publicist is just playing the PR game, we'll have to wait and see.

The other four Broncos who’ve been in the back of police cruisers this year:

  • Elvis Dumervil is accused of assaulting a parking lot attendant in October.
  • Perrish Cox is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in September.
  • D.J. Williams was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in November.
  • Kevin Alexander was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery in December. (He was cut from the team.)

Let’s hope John Fox can instill a little more common sense into the team.
