The breed of bird visits Colorado about every five years. However, according to many birdwatchers the numbers they are coming this year don't compare to years prior where only a handful of sightings were reported.

According to Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory biologist Rob Sparks, "This year it's quite amazing."

Flocks of hundreds of these birds have been spotted all throughout the state and even in our own back yard. The Sensory Garden at the Poudre Learning Center in Greeley, The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery and even the small town of Nunn have seen hundreds of this rare bird flocking around bird feeders.

According to Sparks, the is no real explanation why the massive number of redpoll's are visiting us this year. Some experts say that it may be due to a "poor season for tree seeds in their usual feeding spots, driving them here, to a baby-booming whopper of a breeding season."
