How many people do you know that get all cranky at the mere mention of their birthday? They say things like "I don't want to celebrate my birthday," or "Great, another way to remind me of how old I am."

Well, bah-humbug to them. You're never too old to enjoy a birthday! It seems a lot of birthday parties kind of lose their luster once kids get to be in high school, suddenly it's "not cool" to to have a sleep over with cake and ice cream. After that we go through the teenage years where we just want a wad a cash and our families to leave us the heck alone. Then come the early 20's when birthdays become more of an excuse to go to the bars. After that birthdays keep going by faster and faster and fewer people seem make a big deal about your big day. (Which I would chalk up to the lackluster enthusiasm we show for our own birthdays.)

You know what I think happens? I think people starting counting down instead of up...and that makes birthdays depressing.

If you're just counting down the years until you can retire (or die), you're obviously not living the best life you could be. You know what a birthday is? It's not a notch carved in your wall reminding you that you're a year closer to your last breath. It's a notch carved in your wall commemorating all the things you've ever done.

Instead of getting angry that people want to celebrate your birthday, realize that those people are probably just happy to have you in their lives and they want to celebrate another year of you.

So, I don't care if your 5 or 95, when your birthday comes around, take stock in what you have done in those glorious years on this earth, light up some birthday cake candles, find someone you care about the celebrate it with and have yourself a happy birthday!

P.S. Thank you all for the birthday wishes,
