Having cancer sucks. There's really no sugar-coating that fact. When you have to undergo a battery of tests and treatments in different buildings and different cities, it gets even worse.

Cancer patients in Northern Colorado can now look forward to having a complete cancer center in Fort Collins, that houses every aspect of cancer care under one roof.

Poudre Valley Health System is creating a $17.5 million state-of-the art cancer care center on its Harmony Campus in Fort Collins. The center will bring all of the different aspects of cancer care under one roof, including chemotherapy, counseling, massage and nutrition.

I remember when I was going through my own cancer treatment I lived in Longmont, and had to drive 47 miles to Denver and then go to 2-4 different buildings for most of my treatments and check ups. And I had to do that 2, 3, even 4 times a week for close to 9-months.

A center like this could have saved a lot of time, a lot of driving, and a lot of headaches. Kudos to PVHS for getting the ball rolling on this!

This is all part of a  long-term plan that will join with the existing Cancer Center of the Rockies and a $7.1-million expansion of their radiation oncology department.

In 2010, PVHS diagnosed 1,069 new cancer cases, not including people who were already in treatment.

According to state statistics, cancer killed 412 people in Larimer County last year.
