In a marketing move to create some excitement about a board game that has been around since 1934, Hasbro has announced they will be retiring one of the classic tokens from the Monopoly game and introducing a new one. And fan votes will decide on which token gets the axe and which one is added to the game.

I, for one, love Monopoly and my token of choice is the battleship. (No idea why, it just is.) Now if I had to cast my vote for what piece had to go, I’d say the wheelbarrow. (I doubt I’m alone here, because a survey from 1998 showed the wheelbarrow was the least popular Monopoly token and I don’t think anything has happened in the past 15 years that would skyrocket its popularity.) I mean you’re playing a game about becoming the richest person in the game and bankrupting everyone else, who wants to push around a wheelbarrow to do that?!

The tokens on the chopping block are; the race car, iron, Scottie dog, wheelbarrow, shoe, top hat, thimble and battleship. If you want to cast your vote you can do it here on the Monopoly Facebook page. (And I swear, if the battleship loses this vote, I’m boycotting Hasbro for at least 10 minutes and holding youresponsible.)

Now, instead of just voting for what piece goes to jail, without passing go, for eternity...they also want you to cast your vote on what token they should add to the game.

A toy robot, a helicopter, a guitar, a diamond ring, or a cat?

Now, I’m torn. The music lover in me thinks it should be the guitar and the geek in me wants the toy robot. However, this vote is cast on the Internet, so I’d put my money on the cat winning in a landslide.

Save one Token. Vote in another.

In an unlucky roll of the dice, every Monopoly token has landed in jail. One will be locked up forever and replaced with a new piece. Luckily, you’ll have the chance to vote to save your favorite token every day. Don’t skip your turn!

According to 9 News,

A limited-run "Golden Token" Monopoly ($17.99) arrives in Target stores exclusively in mid-February, and it will be the last edition to have all of the classic tokens and the only set to have all five of the potential new pieces as well. The first Monopoly game to reflect the new token lineup will be released in late summer.

What piece do you want to see go? And which one do you want to see added? Let me know in the comments below.
