The release of the Grand Theft Auto 5 video game was a big deal, it took in $800-million dollars in one day.  Three men in New York wanted the game so badly that they pretended to be cops to get a hold of the game before other shoppers.

Pretending to be a cop, so you can play a game where you are a criminal. I wonder if this is a case of life imitating art, or visa-versa.

According to SILive, our debaucherous trio (all ages 19-20) had some police connections; one was an auxiliary NYPD officer, and another was the son of a retried officer. Their plan was simple, they dress up as police officers and then cut in front of hundreds of people in line at a Staten Island mall to buy "Grand Theft Auto V" before anyone else. They even had a car, complete with police lights and a siren. (Turns out they had bought the car at a police auction.)

They had everyone fooled; a mall security guard offered to buy them coffee, the GameStop manager thanked them for the extra support, and a store employee obliged when the officers asked if they could buy the game.

However, this trio's 'brilliant' plan all came to a halt when they left the mall because they pulled an illegal U-turn in front of a real cop. The actual officer followed the unmarked car to one of the boy's homes.

Now all three face charges of second-degree criminal impersonation.

Seems like an awful lot of work to get a video game a few hours early, hek they even paid for their copies for the game. I'm pretty sure they would be in less trouble if they'd actually just gone in and tried to steal the games outright. (Not that I'm condoning that, just pointing out the lack of common sense.)
