According to the Huffington Post, around 18,000 neo-pagans, new age folk and curious visitors gathered at Stonehenge, southwest of London this morning to watch the sunrise over the ancient stone circle. Most of them celebrating the arrival of the summer solstice.

In London they were dealing with heavy rain, but it’s nothing but sunshine outside the 99.9 The Point studios as we ring in the first official day of summer!

Technically summer will start at 11:16am (Mountain Standard Time) today.

It is out longest day of the year and the forecast calls for sunshine and a high near 80, so may I recommend slapping on some sunscreen, grabbing a frosty beverage and enjoying a little bit of the sunshine today.

Even Google is doing some celebrating with their Google Doodle.

What exactly is the summer solsistice?

In the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the summer season is the day of the year when the Sun is farthest north (on June 20th or 21st). This day is known as the Summer Solstice.

The declination of the Sun on the Summer Solstice is known as the tropic of cancer (23° 27'). In the southern hemisphere, winter and summer solstices are exchanged so that the Summer Solstice is the day on which the Sun is farthest south. [CALENDAR UPDATES]
