Fort Collins Woman Replaces ‘Brawny Man’ in Paper Towel Ads

This month, the Brawny paper towel company is ditching the iconic, rugged man in flannel and replacing him with another image of ‘strong’ — women. One of whom is Dr. Patty Lopez, an engineer from Fort Collins, according to KRQE in New Mexico.

Tech Republic reports that Dr. Lopez, who now lives in Fort Collins and works for Intel, is originally from a rural town in New Mexico. She began studying computer science in college in the 1970s, and it was in her engineering classes that she noticed how few women there were in that field.

“My passion has been to trying to create more opportunities for young girls to see themselves as successful in tech, and change the dominant view that it is only for white and Asian males.” source: Tech Republic

In the Brawny ad, Dr. Lopez explains that she is a first-gen college graduate with a masters and PhD. As a woman working in technology, she says there can be a lot of ‘pressure and scrutiny,’ but she is the voice cheering on other women.

She’s also one of the faces of Brawny’s #StrengthHasNoGender campaign as a part of Women’s History Month.
