Every January, Coloradans flock to Aspen to get their extreme sports fix. However, next year will look a little different.

In a Tuesday (Dec. 15) press release, ESPN X Games announced that the X Games Aspen 2021 is going virtual, stating that the event "will be closed to the public and produced with comprehensive COVID-19 mitigation protocols in place for participants and staff."

While the details are not yet finalized, the release promised a virtual X Games Aspen experience for fans, where they will be able to create custom avatars to explore event content in an interactive environment.

The athletes themselves, including stars Chloe Kim, Shaun White, and Gus Kenworthy, will still compete on the mountain in a variety of events, such as SuperPipe, Slopestyle, Big Air, and Men's Knuckle Huck.

A snowboard and freeski event will also make its North American debut during the games.

Fans can watch the event on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC from January 29-31. Additional behind-the-scenes content will also be available via @XGames on social media platforms.
