Over the last 25 years, dating back to 1997, Fort Collins has seen some frigid years as well as some not-all-that-bad years when it comes to how low it's gotten.

With a new year approaching, it's fun to look at the past. I thought we'd take a look at the last 25 years when it comes to how cold it's gotten outside in January. Imagine hanging out out along the shores of Horsetooth when it dropped down to -16°. Or having a stroll in Old Town when the lowest temperature that day was a balmy 11°.

The coldest temp for January of 1997 is 16 degrees colder than in 2021. Does that have to do with climate change? Keep in mind, just a few years ago it did drop to -16 one  January day in 2017, so..

The way December of 2021 has been so far, I'm betting Mother Nature is going to be giving us the 'what for' any day now. Long johns, heavy winter caps and gloves, flannel and hot cocoa will be in order, soon. It can't stay this warm for long.

A lot of people like the cold. Those people are crazy, in my opinion. Me? I like it warm. If it drops below 15°, I start to lock up, like a bad engine. I actually bought a USB-powered hand warming device; just the other day it slipped out of my hands on the way out the door and dropped two flights to the pavement. It did not survive. Back to the store, I shall go.
