To people like me, a pet is not just a pet, they're part of the family, so the latest news about pet deaths linked to jerky treats is absolutely heartbreaking. According to NBC News, nearly 600 animals have died and more than 3,500 have become sick because of a mystery illness that is connected to jerky treats from China.

(400 or so animals have become sick since January of this year and nearly 100 have died.)

Federal animal health officials are actively investigating the illnesses but have yet to find the specific cause.

Most of the cases have been in dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes — although 10 cats have been sickened, too — after eating chicken, duck and sweet potato jerky treats.

In hopes of finding out what, exactly, is making pets sick the FDA is now asking veterinarians to send detailed information about any animals sickened by jerky treats. They have also put out a fact sheet to try and help pet owners in knowing what to watch out for.

That's scary news, I would hate to ever feel like hurt or killed my pet because I was giving them treats that they love. If you have a pet, make sure you know what your feeding them and keep those furry friends safe!
