Why not make a part of Ft. Collins heritage a part of your Mother's day? Rides on the historic Birney Car No. 21 trolley will be free Sunday in Fort Collins for mothers and grandmothers (when accompanied by a fare-paying adult or child).

Did you know Fort Collins had a running trolley?

I think the Ft. Collins Trolley is one of the hidden gems of our town.  I remember coming to college at CSU and riding my bike over the trolley tracks wondering what they were for. That was until one fateful Sunday morning when I finally saw the Trolley trolling along Mountain Avenue. How many other towns can say they still have a drive-in and a running trolley?

If you want to ride, it runs from noon to 5 p.m. weekends and holidays along Mountain Avenue between City Park and Old Town through September. The streetcar's depot is next to the tennis courts in City Park and there are other boarding stations along Mountain Avenue at Shields Street, Loomis Street and Howes Street.

Fares for the 1/2-hour round trip are:

  • Adults: $2
  • Seniors: $1
  • Children 2 through 12: $1 (Children under 2 free)

You can read all about the volunteer efforts of the Ft. Collins Municipal Railway on their website.

We operate Fort Collins Birney Safety Car 21, one of four cars purchased by the City in 1919. Birney cars provided daily service until 1951. Afterwards, Car 21 sat in a park for almost three decades. We restored it, rebuilt the line on West Mountain Ave., and operate the car on weekend afternoons from May through September.

We are the Fort Collins Municipal Railway Society, an all-volunteer organization working with the city of Fort Collins, CO to provide a heritage streetcar experience.
