A man died on Thursday (Jan. 14) after he was rescued from a pit in north Greeley following a trench wall collapse.

According to the Greeley Tribune, the trench wall collapse was reported on Thursday afternoon northeast of F Street and North 35th Avenue, in the drained pit left by Poudre Ponds.

Both the Greeley Fire Department and Greeley police responded to the scene. The Greeley Fire Department initially sent an engine, a ladder truck and a battalion chief - but once reports came in stating an individual was inside the trench and was partially buried as a result of the wall collapse, the department dispatched a second engine, ladder truck and battalion chief before calling in a third engine with trench collapse gear.

At about 12:25 p.m., the man was rescued from the pit, before a third engine made it to the scene.

The individual, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Greeley Tribune says the Weld County Coroner’s Office will release his identity pending notification of next of kin.
