The initiative to put the idea of retail sales of marijuana before Loveland voters in the fall fell short of the number of the required signatures.

In the upcoming fall election for Lovelanders, there is still a chance that we (I live and vote in Loveland) will be voting on retail sales of marijuana, but it seems unlikely.

The Reporter-Herald has the story on how a citizen petition submitted 3,589 signatures, but Loveland's City Clerk found that only 2,142 were actually valid.

To make the ballot, Loveland's charter states that petitions need to have 5% of registered voters signatures, which means 2,888 signatures for this fall.

According to the Reporter-Herald, supporters of the initiative have until September 4 to get those 2,888 signatures, starting from scratch.

If they do not come up with the 2,888 signatures, there's is the 'off chance' that the City Council could just put it on the ballot, themselves. If the signatures come in after September 4, they could call for a 'special election.'

In 2010, Loveland voters decided to ban medicinal marijuana sales.
