K9 units play a vital role in helping law enforcement, to reduce the number of man hours spent on calls, while also increasing the safety of officers involved on calls.

They respond to everything from violent scenarios, to building searches, fleeing subjects, searches for missing, lost, or endangered children or persons, and narcotic calls.

Just like the human officers that are prepared to combat all sorts of crimes and situations, K9 officers also need to be fully equipped to handle anything that may come up on the job.

Fortunately for Larimer County Sheriff's Office, a special donation of body armor was given to a member of the K9 unit, courtesy of the non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Once delivered, in eight to ten weeks, K9 Dox will be outfitted with a bullet and stab protective vest. The vest will be embroidered with the sentiment "Honoring those who served and sacrificed."

Since being established in Massachusetts in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 3,500 protective vests to four-legged officers around the country.

The program is open to dogs who are actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified. They must also be at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are also eligible to participate.
