Located in Chaffee County, Winfield was once home to as many as 1,500 residents. At its richest, Winfield was home to a school, three saloons, three stores, two hotels, a church, a boarding house, and more.

The earliest prospecting in Winfield took place in the 1860s and continued until the silver market crashed in 1893.

However, Winfield would bounce back and resume mining operations by the early 1900s only to once again shut down the mines for good by 1918.

Today, a number of the buildings including the school and numerous homes are still standing.
