WATCH: Horse Rescued from Canal in Western Colorado

Numerous fire departments, along with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and a local towing company, recently rescued a horse that was trapped in a canal.

A Horse Was Trapped in a Canal in Western Colorado

The incident took place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at a point in the canal that runs through Grand Junction and Clifton, Colorado.

The story was shared by the Clifton Fire Protection District in a Facebook post on Monday, October 27, 2025, though it’s unclear as to how the horse became trapped in the canal, who the horse belongs to, how the horse got to the canal in the first place, and how it was discovered that the horse was stuck.

Trapped Horse Rescued from Western Colorado Canal

The Clifton Fire Protection District was assisted by members of the Lower Valley Fire District, the Grand Junction Fire Department, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, and Giradi’s Towing.

The video posted by the Clifton Fire Protection District shows the horse being removed from the canal via a harness, which was attached to the animal while it was still in the canal. Luckily, the horse was safely lifted out of the canal by a crane.

Where is the Western Colorado Horse Now?

While it’s unclear as to whether or not the horse has been returned to its owner or the current whereabouts of the animal altogether, responders to the scene that rescued the horse have reported that after it was rescued, it was taken to a veterinarian to be evaluated.
