Colorado’s Grand Mesa Now the Focus of a Grim Investigation

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office says human remains discovered at a Grand Mesa picnic area had been scavenged by a bear, and likely other wildlife.

Authorities received a call about human remains near Lands End Road on Sunday, July 5^th, and are asking the public to come forward to help them piece together what may have happened and when.

Whoever discovered the human remains near Wild Rose Picnic Area reported suspected human remains. I can’t imagine what they found. The remains were described as "scavenged and scattered" near the picnic area.

The death is under investigation, the remains have not been identified, and the cause of death is to be determined by the Mesa County Coroner. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says there is no threat to guests visiting the Grand Mesa, and no sign of a bear targeting people.

Where the Discovery Happened on Colorado's Grand Mesa

The Wild Rose Picnic Area and Wild Rose Campground are in a beautiful spot along the historic Lands End Road (gravel section) on the West edge of Grand Mesa. Like many parts of Mesa County, the Grand Mesa is also home to black bears, making bear awareness an important part of safely enjoying the outdoors.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity near the Wild Rose Campground area between June 22 and July 5, 2026, to reach out.
