What’s Burning West of De Beque, Colorado? Here’s the Latest
There seems to be some confusion online. Colorado’s famous concert venue in Morrison is not on fire. The Red Rock Fire, however, is very real, and right here in Western Colorado.
Drivers have been able to see the smoke from I-70 at times this week, but if you thought that was just smoke from the Snyder Mesa Fire or more smoke from Utah, it is not.

Where Is the Fire Burning?

The Red Rock Fire started June 27, the same day as many of the other wildfires currently burning in Western Colorado. Red Rock Fire (the fire beneath Redrock Point) is burning about 17 miles west of De Beque at 310 acres. It’s been burning for four days in an area with steep drainages, very limited road access, and dense pockets of pinyon-juniper vegetation. The fire burns in a place elevated above Interstate 70, in a location so rugged that the fire has been unable to jump from its current location.
How Many Firefighters Are Responding to the Red Rock Fire?
While some of the larger wildfires might have a crew of 200+, the Red Rock Fire has been nearly contained by about 40 hard-working wildland firefighters. Where would Colorado be without these heroes putting out all these fires? The fire is not threatening I-70 and has not so far.
With the fire nearing 90% containment, we can thank agencies like the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit. Resources working on the line include local responders from the De Beque Fire Protection District, the Bureau of Land Management, and mutual aid crews such as the Eagle River Fire Protection District.
