Here’s Why It’s So Hard to Find a Hotel Room in Northern Colorado Every July 4
The 4th of July is not just America's birthday celebration, it brings family and friends together. A lot of Colorado hotel rooms get booked by an annual event that happens around the 4th of July.
Hotel Rooms from Aurora to Fort Collins Get Booked for Softball Families
For over 20 years, softball players across the country have traveled to Colorado to play in the "Sparkler" Tournament; it's co-tournament, "Fireworks," has been happening for over 50 years. It's the largest youth softball fastpitch tournament in the world.
On the average, the tournaments bring in over 1,000 teams; each team consisting of over a dozen players/coaches and the players' parents/guardians. That is a lot of rooms that have to be booked for this "stay and play" tournament, where players are required to stay (barring exceptions.)
Triple Crown Sports, which hosts 100s of tournaments across the entire country each years, began with a small tournament in Meeker, Colorado in 1982. Steamboat and Grand Junction came on board, which gave the organization the name: Triple Crown
I have a friend who's coached softball for over 20 years; his teams have to travel a lot to places like North Platte, Nebraska and Rapid City, South Dakota.
It seems to be a real hassle, organizing a road trip, with at least one night's lodging for his teams. Though, it's not like 1,000 teams head out to those tournaments, so he's lucky.
While, it makes it hard to find a room when people are headed to Colorado for a 4th of July vacation, it's great that the girls get to have a huge week of softball action. It gives then a taste of traveling (the pros and cons) while getting to meet a ton of other players.
