Threat of Pipe Bomb Shuts Down Highway 34 West of Greeley, Colorado

In today's world, you just can't be too cautious when someone claims to have a pipe bomb in their car. On March 5, 2025, according to KDVR, the Colorado State Patrol pulled a car over for speeding on westbound Highway 34; during the stop, that driver made the claim that there was a pipe bomb.

No matter how seasoned a trooper is, that has to be a very scary situation for them; a explosive device like that could do serious harm (if not death) to not only the driver but the officers involved.

The Colorado State Patrol ended up shutting down the highway near Highway 257 to County Road 13. With that, westbound commuters out of Greeley were detoured to the north, while the Weld County Bomb Squad arrived and investigated.

The authorities may have been on heightened alert, due to an explosive device was discovered in a student's backpack at Ponderosa High School in Parker, the day prior.

After a thorough investigation, no explosive device was found;  which, in the end is a good thing: No explosion, and this person's charges won't include possession of an explosive device (just the false claim of having one.)

Again, on the bright side, the incident had the highway shut down for only 30 minutes, according the City of Greeley's posts on X. While many people were late to get where they were headed that morning, things could have been much, much worse.
