A Look Inside a Colorado Safeway on Its Very Last Day Before Closing for Good
In September of 2025 it was announced that 10 Colorado Safeway locations would be shutdown before Thanksgiving, with Loveland being one of those 10. For over half a century, generations of Lovelanders had used that grocery store, to be inside on its final day was disheartening.
While the Downtown Safeway in Loveland had become much-maligned (being called the UN-Safeway, among other things,) many, many people in Downtown and across Loveland had counted on it. It was easy to get to, for whether you needed your weekly groceries or to pop in for some wrapping paper for gift. Sure, it has its problems, but It was "always" there when you needed it.

In 2022, they did a remodel of that Downtown Safeway, adding new coolers (which were sorely needed) for one thing. It gave you the impression that that Safeway's days weren't as numbered as they turned out to be. Years from now, when the property is redeveloped, people will drive by and point, "That's where the Safeway used to be..." as they drive by what will probably be a multi-use [apartment building.]

When I paid my last visit to the Downtown Safeway on its last day, October 25, 2025, it was with trepidation: I didn't want to see how sad it probably looked, but like watching a wreck on the highway, it was hard to not see the how it looked. As I approached, I noticed that the automatic entrance door kept opening and closing, with nobody walking up. I put it down to ghosts of customers past, entering to pay their own respects.
Take a tour of that last day for Downtown Loveland's Safeway.
