The first snowfall of each new winter is typically a big deal. After so many weeks of unbearable heat, who wouldn't love a little cool down even just for a while? Well, until Christmas is over anyway, then summer can't come back soon enough. Nobody has any use for snow and cold in January, February and March.

All that being said, if snow is your thing, depending on where you live you may be able to catch a glimpse of it this weekend.

The mountains west of Northern Colorado are actually forecast some decent snowfall this weekend, specifically Saturday night into Sunday in places like Estes Park, other mountain towns and peaks across the area.

Officially, the forecast overnight Saturday night in Estes Park will be only 35°, with rain turning to snow overnight and a high only in the mid-40s on Sunday.

Elsewhere across the state, the forecast isn't for significant snowfall in any populated areas but mostly above the treelines. Ski resorts are likely to get at least something however.

Additionally, the National Weather Service is keeping a close eye on the I-70 corridor for what they say could be up to 6 to 12 inches. While a small chance, it's definitely not a zero percent chance.

You can check out the official NWS "probabilistic snow" forecast for the weekend on their website.

When Colorado Cities Can Expect First Snow Fall?

When can we expect the first snowfall in Colorado? According to the National Weather Service, the mean date for the first measurable snow in the state of Colorado is October 18th. Oddly, the actual first snows in the state rarely fall on that date.

Here's a look at a number of records for the earliest measurable snowfalls around Colorado. Information comes courtesy of the National Weather Service, Extreme Weather Watch, and 9News.
