Nobody is surprised when you say that rental prices are skyrocketing in Northern Colorado. Many of us in Fort Collins are stressed.

Not only are we stressed because our cost of living is getting incredibly high, but many of us are stressed because we do not know if rental prices are going to continue to climb.

Fort Collins Residents Paint Picture of Reality

As a Fort Collins resident myself, it was difficult not to be concerned when I was recently reading a post on the r/FortCollins subreddit. Fort Collins residents were discussing the rising rates for a rental.

One user said that their rent has gone up $660 in just three years of living in the same apartment. They also said that they are considering adding a roommate and were frustrated because they never imagined themselves getting a roommate at 30 years old.

Another said they paid $800 for a two-bedroom home at Courtney Park in 2004. The cheapest apartment there now is over double that cost.

Here is an interesting perspective from one user.

I work in analysis of rent prices around the country. In my opinion the biggest problem is corporate landlords and private equity owing huge swaths of housing. That’s what we need to stop. They are crap landlords and they raise rent faster than anyone else. - anonymois1111111

Fort Collins and Greeley have now joined Denver and Boulder as two of the most expensive housing markets in the nation. Is there any way we can reverse this? There is, but it would have to be a process.

Colorado has considered local rent control due to the dramatic whiplash of rent price hikes. The AP says that Colorado's median home price has risen by 40% since 2020. That has to be one of the highest price hikes across the nation.

Rent control could be in the future for Colorado. Rent control is set by the government and limits the amount of rent that landlords can charge for rentals. Rent control is legal in seven states, including the District of Columbia.

As I say this, I want to point out that a bill for rent control failed in Colorado this year. Governor Jared Polic is trying to find a way to accommodate the housing crisis.
