Elephants the Same Rights As People? A Colorado Court Will Decide
Animal activists are taking a case to the Colorado Supreme Court and the argument is being heard across the globe. A case in Colorado might open up a larger conversation about the lives of elephants.
There are many strong opinions on both sides of the argument. Here are the facts about what we know.
Colorado Supreme Court and Elephants
On October 24, the Colorado Supreme Court will hear from the animal rights group The NonHuman Rights Project about five elephants that live at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo at Colorado Springs.
Meanwhile, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo believes that The NonHuman Rights Project has ulterior motives. Here is what they posted on their Facebook page.
As our community already knows, at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, we take excellent care of our beloved elephants. The NhRP’s case is not about our elephant care. Their goal is to establish a court precedent granting habeas corpus to any animal...
Colorado and Habeas Corpus
The NonHuman Rights Project aims to release the elephants from the zoo and wants them transported to a sanctuary. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo believes that the move would be too stressful for the elephants and they do not see the point.
The NonHuman Rights Project claims that elephants are confined and filed a habeas corpus petition claiming that the elephants suffered trauma.
Habeas corpus would give an animal the same rights as a human being. The Gazette says that two dozen law professors support The NonHuman Rights Project.
