You might notice that if you shop in Ft. Collins you’re now paying just a little bit more than you were in 2010. “Why”, you ask?

Back in November Ft. Collins voters passed issue 2B which added a 0.85 percent sales tax to increase funding for city services. The tax went into effect January 1st.

According to a story in the Coloradoan (City's increased sales tax in effect at local merchants), most local business don’t expect the tax increase to have a big effect on business.  But read a little further into the comments you can see that this seems to be a polarizing issue. Lots of people are happy to fork out a few extra cents at every transaction to help the city, while others are convinced the government is trying to nickel-and-dime us to death and have vowed to shop elsewhere.

Here’s the math for you: A .085 increase is $8.50 added on to a $1000 dollar sale. 85 cents to a $100 sale. And, roughly, just over 3 cents tacked on to your $4 coffee.

Regardless of your stance on the tax, voters passed it, and you're now paying just a little bit extra to 'Shop Fort Collins First'.
