Greeley Nurse Battled Cancer While Treating COVID Patients
The NoCo Virus Tracker articles are made possible by our partner, the Keep NoCo Open campaign that reminds citizens to wear a mask, wash your hands, physically distance and support local as Northern Colorado recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his State of the State speech, which took place on February 17, 2021, Governor Polis highlighted a local hero: Toni Moses, a Greeley nurse who was going through a private battle while helping COVID-19 patients this year.
Governor Polis highlighted the strength of Colorado's health-care workers in his speech, saying:
Day after day our brave health care workers put their own lives on hold and have made so many sacrifices to save so many souls.
That statement rang true for Toni Moses, who was undergoing chemotherapy for stage four cancer in 2020 while treating COVID-19 patients at the same time. Polis invited Moses to join him in the House chamber, according to CBS Denver, so that she could share her story.
Moses was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019 and went through several rounds of chemotherapy in 2020, finishing up her first round right when COVID-19 cases began to rise in our state. However, Moses continued to work and help those in need, despite being at high-risk herself.
CBS Denver reports that Moses will know in two weeks if she is cancer-free, but she noted that continuing to work through her hardship and helping those who were in need gives her life purpose.
