Full Moon Illuminates Christmas for the First Time Since 1977
For the first time since 1977, a full moon will land on Christmas Day.
December's moon reaches peak size December 25 at 6:11 a.m. This event won't happen again until year 2034.
Every full moon traditionally gets its own nickname; Farmer's Almanac says the official nickname of the full moon on December 25 is the Full Long Night's Moon or the Full Cold Moon, in honor of December's dark, cold nights. Space.com says it can also be called the Moon Before Yule.
