This year has brought a lot of snow in Colorado, and along with it avalanches.

Backcountry skiers/riders shred through terrain where avalanches are prevalent. If you're considering trying out those slopes you might want to attend New Belgium's free Avalanche Awareness Clinic.

According to the Colorado Mountain School, every year, avalanches are one of the leading causes of death among backcountry enthusiasts.

Being prepared in the backcountry is key.

Topics the Avalanche Awareness Clinic Covers:
Types of Avalanches
Avalanche Terrain
Snowpack Analysis
Weather Considerations
Avalanche Decision-making
Trip Planning and Preparation
Travel Techniques

"Our guides are trained by the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) to teach avalanche courses, and they also spend some 300 days a year in the field—they KNOW snow from an academic, personal, and practical perspective. Let them share their knowledge with you", according to the Colorado Mountain School's Facebook event.

The clinic dates are: Dec. 15, Dec. 18, Jan. 22, Feb. 5, Feb. 11, Mar. 2, Mar. 9.
