Fort Collins Police Warns of New Local Phone Scam

How'd you spend your morning? You probably made some coffee, brushed your teeth, and had a leisurely drive into work. I spent my morning registering my phone number on the 'Do Not Call' list.

Every day, I get more and more calls from scammers and telemarketers, and at some point, it gets to be too much. Not only that, but a lot of people answer the phone after noticing the local number on their caller ID and end up falling for a scam, and even losing money.

This is what Fort Collins Police Services is warning about heading into the weekend: in a tweet from April 22, @FCPolice said they've received reports of someone reaching out to local residents claiming to be from the police department. You can see the full tweet below.

The scam apparently warns that there is a warrant out for the person on the phone's arrest and a payment must be made in order to avoid going to jail. Of course, this wouldn't happen: Fort Collins Police Services, as a legitimate government entity, will never call and demand payment over the phone.

However, let's say you're concerned that the call is real. FCPS urges you to hang up and call 970-419-FCPD to check in on any outstanding payments, a warrant or a legal issue.

Stay safe, and don't give out personal information to anyone over the phone unless you're sure it's a legitimate government agency.
