Fern Lake Fire Smoke Visible From Fort Collins And Loveland

If you've looked at the mountains at all today, or over the weekend you can see a lot of smoke coming from an area near Estes Park. All of that smoke is from the Fern Lake Fire, which has been burning in Rocky Mountain National Park since October 9th.

According to the Coloradoan, the fire has been spreading due to strong winds and warm, dry weather. It has burned nearly 800 acres so far.

Firefighters aren’t attacking the blaze because it’s in steep, rugged terrain where there are many beetle-killed trees. However, fire managers say they will take quick action to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the park, if necessary. The fire is expected to keep putting out smoke until heavy snow puts it out.

According to InciWeb, the fire is 30% contained and investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.

Investigators believe those who visited the park on October 9 may have information that can help determine both how and where the fire started. If you were in the vicinity of the Cub Lake Trail and/or the Fern Lake Trail any time before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9 you may have pertinent information.
