This story is sad and awesome at the same time.  A couple that was hiking Mount Bierstadt over the weekend spotted a German Shepard that appeared to be abandoned. Scott Washburn and his wife found the dog at about 13,000 feet on Saw Tooth Ridge and the poor thing was severely dehydrated and having trouble breathing. Scott and his wife tried to get the dog to come down with them by putting her over his shoulders but the 100 pound dog was too heavy. Unable to bring the dog down with them, they taped up her paws and snapped a picture and the put it up on their website 14ers.com and shared the story. Immediately they saw a response from people showing concern and wanting to help.  Brandon Vail, a follower of the website, decided that the dog was in jeopardy and something needed to be done so he organized a night hike. A team of organized hikers started hiking at 11pm but were unable to find the dog.

Washburn went back up on Monday with a group of hikers that volunteered to help find the dog, and find the dog they did. They named the dog 'Lucky' and took turns carrying the dog down in a backpack. When they got to the bottom they were met with cheers and took photos of the successful hike.

Eight guys who never met each other came together to rescue a dog that they’d only seen in a picture,” said Washburn.

A big surprise came when a guy saying he was the original owner posted on their website. He said that he had to leave his dog, Missy, when he and a friend became injured while hiking on August 5th.  He apologized for taking the dog on a dangerous hike and thanked them for saving her. The dog was up there for 8 days!!!

Personally, I don’t believe he deserved the dog, he left that dog for dead.” Washburn’s statement sums up the sentiments of his rescue group.

Right now the dog is in the care of a vet and doing well but as for who gets custody is going to be decided by Animal Control.

Who do you think should get to keep the dog?
