Do you drive a newer Hyundai or Kia? You might be eligible for some money because your car might not be getting the gas mileage you thought it was. I'm Bummed that my KIA Soul is not on this list, but I’m not surprised, as I’m actually getting better gas mileage than I expected out of it. However, according to Cars.com, Hyundai and Kia announced that they would reimburse owners of about 900,000 vehicles for misstated mileage ratings.

Is your car one of the affected models?

The news came after an investigation by the EPA into complaints from consumers that the two companies' mileage claims were inflated. As a result, the stated mpg ratings for 75 different trim levels over three model years will be changed, and window stickers of cars on sale will be replaced to reflect the new numbers.

Now, before you start planning your dream vacation with that extra cash, you should know that the reimbursement checks will probably be between $45-$75 for an average driver. (You can read the whole breakdown of how it works here.) They will credit you for the “extra” gas you had to buy in order to get the gas mileage estimates, factoring in the miles you have driven and how much fuel costs in your geographic location.

It's a fairly negligible amount for you, but a HUGE payout for the car companies when you multiply those checks times 900,000 car owners.

Oops.
