Colorado State University has something to smile about today. U.S. News and World Report’s annual list of top public universities was released and CSU climbed seven spots on the list, making them the 60th-ranked school in the nation.

Not too shabby for our rammies!

Okay, technically CSU is tied with Temple University and the University of Utah at number-60 on the list, but we'll take it!

Public colleges and universities are typically operated under the supervision of state governments and are funded, in part, by tax dollars and subsidies from the state. As a result, these universities often offer free or discounted tuition to students considered residents of the state. Public schools run the gamut from small liberal arts colleges to large research institutions.

What schools came in at the very top of the list? Here are the five schools that rounded out the top five:

  • University of California–Berkeley
  • University of California–Los Angeles
  • University of Virginia
  • University of Michigan–Ann Arbor
  • University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill
