Colorado Wolf Sanctuary to Close This Month
I've got some ruff news, friends.
The Rocky Mountain Wildlife Foundation (RMWF), a non-profit organization that has been housing wolves and wolf dogs since 2001, is closing, according to Out There Colorado.
Located in Guffey, RMWF was officially founded by Mark Johnson in 2001, although he has been working with wolves for almost 25 years.
Johnson, along with his wife Catherine, worked to rehabilitate injured or abused wolves and wolf dogs. They permanently took in wolves that could not be released back into the wild.
The public could visit the property on a donation basis, and interact with the animals personally.
Mark and Catherine announced the closing on Sunday (December 1) on their Facebook page.
The couple stated that it has become harder for them to care for the animals due to their age, forcing them to close at the end of December.
The animals will be transferred to another non-profit in Sedalia called Mattersville, which will continue to allow the public to visit the wolves.
Mattersville also helps veterans, particularly those suffering from PTSD. Many of the wolves will likely be working with veterans.
"We thank all of you who have visited or volunteered over the 23 years Mark has been working with wolves," said Catherine. "You are in our hearts forever."
There is no word yet as to when Mattersville will officially launch the new wolf sanctuary.
Until then, both organizations will be documenting the transition on their respective Facebook pages.
