Colorado Makes it Tougher For Teens to Start Driving
Traveling in Colorado may get safer once 2026 rolls around, when a new law goes into effect. With all the distractions out there, for both adults and kids, this is definitely for the best.
Any Colorado driver who has been behind the wheel for any length of time can attest that "things are crazy out there." Colorado legislators agree, and passed a new law to make sure new drivers are ready for the "crazy," which will make our roads all that safer.
It's HB24-1021, a new law about how much training a teen needs to have before they can get their driver's permit or license. If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of disappointed kids across the state; parents too, as young drivers make for great errand runners.
More Hours and More Information for New Colorado Drivers
According to 9News, starting in 2016, to get a learner's permit, kids under 18 will be needing to go through a new 30-hour education course. This course will be about more than what's in the "manual."
The course will also cover things like registration and insurance, which makes sense - you should know a lot more than "who goes first at a 4-way stop," when it comes to getting out on the road.
With the new law, those drivers between the ages of 18-21 will need to get a four-hour driver awareness program before getting their learner's permit or driver's license.
More Distractions for Colorado Drivers Means We Need More Training
When many Coloradans first got their permits and licenses, there weren't cell phones, let alone smartphones, that can take you focus away from what's important: driving safely. It's good that the state is looking for ways to make us all safer out there in the "craziness."

So, be on the lookout for new "Driver's Education" courses to start popping up; a lot of kids are going to need that 30-hour course.
