Thankfully, all of the parents of the kids on my son's team are awesome and have actually been a pleasure to see every week, and I've even developed some personal friendships as well which is always a good thing. I want to take it a step further and say that mosof the parents that I've been around have been awesome. But there are those few that really stand out in the crowd, and not in a good way.

My son is six, and for this particular flag football league in Windsor, which is awesome,  there are six- and 7-year-olds that play and the kids are just fantastic. Their energy and enthusiasm is really something to watch and puts a smile on my face every time. Some of the parents though...that's another story.

We have heard some things come from other parents' mouths, whether it be towards officials, coaches, or even other players, that is nothing short of disgusting and absolutely uncalled for.

Are there some questionable calls? Sure. But these officials are mostly kids and some adults who are volunteering their time to be there helping out and supporting our kids. They're not professional refs.

I've seen parents just tear into referees in the middle of the game and pull them aside after the game yelling at them. All while their kids are watching, and that just makes me cringe.

Parenting is hard and I would never tell another parent how to do their job. But cursing out a referee for not making the right call or making a bad call is certainly not a reason for you to act like a moron. I'm not a parenting expert but to me, that's not really setting the best example for your child. This wasn't from an incident here locally, but it's not too far off from what I saw happen recently. It's embarrassing for not only him but think about how horrible the kid has to feel.

Another way to make yourself look like a complete moron and embarrass the heck out of your kid (and yourself) is by tearing into your coach because your kid isn't playing enough or in the right position (according to you).

Once again, these coaches are volunteering their time to help your child succeed, and especially at this age of six to seven years old, the most important thing is teaching them the basics of the game and give everyone a shot at playing the various positions so they learn how do multiple things on the field. And how to be a great teammate.

So the last thing I want to say is this: it's good to be loud and proud and be your kid's #1 fan, but I encourage all parents to do it respectfully and put themselves in their child's shoes. Do you want them to feel embarrassed and dread you being at the game, or do you want your child to WANT you to be at their games?

I think we can all agree that we as adults need to come together and act like adults and set good examples for our kids and not end up at this point. At certain times this past season, I thought some really bad incidents were going to happen. Thankfully it hasn't and hopefully won't anytime soon...or ever.
