Nothing can come between a dog lover and their beloved dog child - and for a lot of people, their dog is more loved than their spouse or significant other.

According to a new survey of nearly 1,000 dog owners, 38% love their dog more than their partner or spouse.

Performed by PoochPerks.com, a pet subscription box service, the survey reveals dog owners will admit they'd be slightly more devastated by their pet running away than a breakup. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being most devastated, a runaway dog averaged a 9.1 versus 8.8 for a breakup.

"Our dogs are more than just pets. They are companions who provide emotional support and joy in our lives -- much in the way a spouse is meant to," says Tina Vidal, president and pack leader at Pooch Perks. "So the fact that so many Americans would choose their dog over their partner may not come as a surprise to those of us who would do anything for our pup."

The survey also found that 94% of dog owners find it important that their dog like their significant other and 71% say there would be relationship problems if the two didn't get along.

About half of survey respondents said they trust their dog and partner or spouse equally.
