$2 dollars isn't really that much right? Well it adds up and its pretty much a fee to pay your bill. So essentially Verizon is charging you money to pay your bill. Starting January 15th Verizon customers who make one-time payments by phone or online are going to be charged the $2 dollar "convenient charge."

Verizon said in a statement:

The fee will help allow us to continue to support these single bill payment options ... and is designed to address costs incurred by us for only those customers who choose to make single bill payments.

There are four ways you can avoid this charge: You can pay using an electronic check, you can pay using your banking account online, use a Verizon gift card or set up your account to debt your bank account every month with a monthly payment for your phone bill.
