WHAT TO BUY FOR THANKSGIVING

  • Turkey: remember to allow for 1 pound per person (don't forget about left overs, if you want them pad your count a bit, meaning, buy a little bit bigger turkey)
  • Potatoes: mashing potatoes helps them go a long way, without getting into a long mathematical equation, a good rule of thumb for deciding how many potatoes you'll need to mash is to count half of a medium potato per person
  • Sweet Potatoes/Yams: not everyone likes this Thanksgiving standard so there is no need to go hog wild. You'll need approximately one sweet potato/yam per every three people
  • Stuffing/Dressing: the difference between stuffing and dressing is really simple, everyone refers to it as stuffing, but really, one you put in the bird and one you don't, essentially it is the same thing. Unless your family really likes this side dish you will only need one loaf of bread, 4-5 stalks of celery, a medium yellow onion, a can of chicken broth, one can of cream of chicken soup, 2 sticks of butter and 2 Tbs of poultry seasoning, if making it homemade, or three boxes of the pre-made stuffing. (you can also use one bag of the cubed and packaged bread crumbs)
  • Gravy: don't let this intimidate you if this isn't a strong suit of yours, gravy is easy and you can do it. There are a million ways to get from drippings to table gravy, here's just one way. Remove the turkey from the roasting pan and set the roasting pan on the stove top. Under a medium-high heat add one large can of chicken broth and scrape up the pieces stuck to the bottom of the roasting pan, bring to a simmer and add a flour/water slurry (equal parts water and flour) or equal parts butter and flour to thicken. Once it reaches a low boil, reduce the heat and let sit until dinner.
  • Rolls: 12-24 will be needed for gravy dipping, sandwich making and just eating with butter (unless you have 4 people, then stick with 12, yes, you'll likely eat all of them no matter what)
  • Corn: 3-4 cans for 6-14 guests or two 10 oz frozen bags
  • Green Bean Casserole: 2 cans of green beans, 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 can of milk, Tbs of soy sauce and half a can of fried onions
  • Cranberries: 1 can of the jellied kind will do
