This week, the fashion industry is mourning the loss of iconic designer, Oscar de la Renta. The Dominican American designer seemed to dress nearly every star in the galaxy, from musicians and actresses to heiresses of high society. While I will never get my hands on an Oscar de la Renta dress, I admire his work from afar.

Fashion is a very fast industry. Sometimes I think trends come in and go out faster than I can get in and out of the DMV. In the instance of super low-cut pants and bubble shirts, I’m glad that’s true. Oscar de la Renta, however, was not a fad designer, and that is what I respect about his work. His garments aren’t tailored to a specific time, but rather any time.  Fresh and artistic yet classically timeless, his gowns are contemporary creations that air the same nostalgia as your grandmother’s wedding dress.

I rewound the tape of time a little bit to take a look back at some Oscar de la Renta dresses from the last decade that would still stun on the runway today.

Oscar de la Renta Summer 2004

This bohemian Oscar de la Renta is from the 2004 spring/summer line. Reminiscent of the 1950s, this dress is probably my personal favorite of all time, and it's hard to believe it debuted the same year that Laguna Beach dictated most fashion trends.

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2005

The fall 2005 line featured a series of perfect LBDs (little black dresses) that make the song "Moon River" and eating pastries come to mind.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2006

In 2006, Oscar de La Renta’s spring line could have been the best thing to happen to a Mad Men costume designer. I mean Megan Draper (Jessica Paré) in this dress? I think yes.

    Oscar de la Renta 2009

My favorite Oscar de la Renta from 2009 channels the spirit of a 1920s flapper dress, and I can't help but wonder if she has a flask under there.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2010

If the spring 2010 line was a New York apartment, it would be pre-war, wearing the elegance of the 20s and 30s.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012

With some lace and paper flowers, there is something very Stevie Nicks about the dresses in this spring 2012 show, and who doesn't love a touch of gypsy?
