Police have released a photo of James Holmes, the suspect in the shooting at an Aurora movie theater that left 12 dead and dozens injured early this morning. Holmes, 24, is a PhD student at CU Denver in the neuroscience program.

Authorities say Holmes lived within a few miles of the theater. Police have not been able to enter the home yet because "It is booby-trapped with "sophisticated" explosives or flammable devices," the police chief said.

Police say Holmes entered the Century 16 Movie Theaters in Aurora during the midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." They said he set off smoke bombs and then used multiple guns to open fire on movie-goers. Witnesses say the gunman was wearing a bullet-proof vest and a riot helmet.

Holmes was taken into custody in the movie theater parking lot.

12 people were killed in the shooting and at least 50 others, including a 3-month-old child, injured. Officials said at least 24 people were being treated at Denver area hospitals Friday morning.
