Skunk Encounter
Another skunk tested positive for rabies in the Windsor area and health officials are worried that even more animals could get it, both domestic and wild.

According to the press release from Weld County Department Of Public Health and Environment, this was the second skunk in four months to test positive in the area. Any mammal, including humans, can contract rabies if not properly vaccinated. Rabies is very dangerous and is often fatal it not treated immediately.

If you think you've been exposed to rabies, call your health provider immediately, and call your veterinarian if you think your animals(s) may have been exposed.

To prevent exposure to rabies:

  • Do not feed, touch or handle wild animals and be cautious of stray dogs and cats
  • Have dogs, cats, horses, and livestock vaccinated regularly by a licensed veterinarian
  • Spay or neuter pets to reduce the number of unwanted or stray animals in the neighborhood
  • Keep wild animals away from your home by keeping trash bins tightly closed and do not leave pet food outdoors.
