News you can use!  Don't fall to victim to the scammers claiming to be Xcel Energy!

These scammers have a caller ID setup to look like a real Xcel Energy phone number.  So here's how it works:

  • Someone will call you claiming they are a Rep from Xcel Energy, claiming you have a late bill
  • They will tell you they are going to come shut your power off in 30 minutes, if they do not receive your payment in 30 minutes dropped off at a location at least 2 hours away (knowing full well you can't make it in time)
  • The caller tells you if you can't make it, you can go get a "Green Dot Money Pak" card, and pay that way
  • The caller then calls you back asking for the serial # off of it, then immediately cashes the card in, it can't be traced, and you are out of the money

Xcel Energy has said that before your service was shut off, notices would be sent out.

Have you or someone you know ever fallen victim to a scam?
