For most people, going for a leisurely neighborhood stroll typically doesn't involve weaving around headstones in a cemetery. In fact, some might consider this to be downright creepy even. However, on September 19, spending some time in the cemetery will be a way of celebrating the city for residents in Fort Collins.

Grandview Cemetery located at 1900 West Mountain Avenue in Fort Collins, will serve as the location that will take guests back through the years of this city's rich history and give them a genuine experience of what the town was like in year's past. Important and key members that have helped to shape the community, including veterans, historians, past mayors, salves turned rag merchants, educators, and entertainers, will all be highlighted throughout the Cemetery Stroll, represented by characters who will be donning replica costumes from that specific time period. The characters will help to guide you back through historical events by reenactments and descriptive storytelling, and this year, guests will be greeted by the very first mayor of Fort Collins. Fun fact, he used to walk the town streets to personally collect taxes from community residents...wonder how that would go over for Mayor Troxell today? The infamous Lady Moon, an Irish barmaid remembered for shooting up a local saloon while searching for her husband will also be represented, along with the first teacher to start a kindergarten west of St. Louis, as well as many other colorful characters who once made a difference and made Fort Collins their home.

The walk through the cemetery will begin at 10:30 a.m. but visitors are encouraged to come earlier to explore featured displays and booths that will be set up.

During the stroll, attendees will be able to get a feel for how the city of Fort Collins transformed from being an active military fort in the mid 1800s, to a town recognized for its heavy presence in the agricultural world, to eventually becoming the vibrant and bustling city that it is today.

Tickets for the Cemetery Stroll are available for purchase at the Fort Collins Senior Center located at 1200 Raintree Drive, or at the Grandview Cemetery main office. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under.

Following the historical walk, guests are invited to stick around for the commemorative Pioneer Picnic featuring live music and entertainment. Admission for the picnic is $9 for adults and $7 for children.
