Were your kids at City Park on Wednesday May 16th?

According to the Coloradoan, a bat was found in City Park in Fort Collins that tested positive for rabies.

Apparently, the bat was picked up by the Larimer Humane Society near the frog sculptures at the northeast corner of Sheldon Lake and a number of kids were seen in the area, but officials don’t know if any of the kids touched the infected animal.

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment is urging parents whose children might have been in City Park on Wednesday afternoon to ask them if they had any contact with the bat.

The coloradoan reports that anyone who did handle or touch the bat you should immediately call the Larimer County Health Department. (Their working hours number is (970) 498-6775 or you can leave a message on their after hours number at (970) 498-6790.)

Just seeing the bat or being in the vicinity of it is no cause for concern. But anyone who had physical contact with it might be at risk.

Rabies is scary stuff, this is no laughing matter. A few weeks ago a skunk also tested positive for it just west of Fort Collins.

Yikes. And the facts that kids could have been playing with it is really scary.
