The London 2012 Summer Olympic Games draw nearer and nearer, and I’m really excited.  I love the idea of the whole world coming together for Olympic events.  Kinda gives me hope for humanity.  Unfortunately, there’s one sport that we won’t get to see at the Games, despite it’s growing popularity.  Fortunately, though, Oxford will be hosting a separate international tournament for this fantastic sport.  I’m speaking, of course, about quidditch!

In case you’ve been living under a rock with your fingers in your ears for the past decade or so, quidditch is the sport played by witches and wizards in the fantasy world of “Harry Potter.” Basically, the players fly around on broomsticks and try to score goals on the opposing team.

Potter fans took such an interest in the game, that actual leagues have started to form all over the world.  Sure, in real life players run around on the ground with broomsticks between their legs; but it still looks like a ton of fun!

The Huffington Post reports that the upcoming quidditch tournament will take place on July 8th and 9th.

Billed as the Quidditch Summer Games, the event will feature five national teams representing the UK, USA, Canada, France, and Australia that will be competing as part of the Olympic torch relay celebration, held as the official torch passes through the town.

In case you’re not familiar, here’s a breakdown of how quiddich works:

Look like fun to you? (Hint: yes. Yes it does.)
