Pawnee Buttes Natural Beauty in Jeopardy as Oil Drilling Begins

Pawnee Buttes is just about 70 miles east of Fort Collins, a beautiful getaway for a weekend afternoon. I know many folks who like to take the trip east to enjoy the outdoors and scenery. Some folks are concerned that the beautiful outdoors in the Pawnee Buttes area might lose some of it’s beauty when oil drilling begins there.

In March, the state issued Carrizo Oil and Gas Inc. a permit to drill oil and gas wells from a site on private property within a half-mile of the south base and directly in front of Pawnee Buttes, the closest oil and gas drilling has ever come to them.

About 3,000 acres of grassland is protected from oil drilling, but on the nearby private property, it’s fair game. We will have to see what the future holds.
