To improve the quality of its food, Panera Bread announced yesterday it is only going to be serving "clean bacon."

You're probably like me and thinking, "I don't eat bacon for its health qualities."

What Panera is talking about is using bacon that only has six additional ingredients rather than the long list of artificial additives that usually accompany a slab. Celery powder will now be used as a natural curing agent. Usually, things like sodium nitrate, sodium phosphate and sodium erythorbate are used to cure but not any longer. Panera says that instead of liquid smoke they will use extra Applewood smoke. The "clean bacon" ingredients will consist of pork, water, sugar, sea salt, celery powder, and thyme extract."

The pigs are raised on a vegetarian diet, without antibiotics or gestation crates for the pregnant ones.
